| Deutsche Welle Deutsche Welle turned 50 in May 2003. Here we take a look back... ...to 1953. On May 3rd, DW goes on the air with just a German service as the Allied High Commission refused to allow anything else. Germany's President Theodor Heuss spoke to "our cherished countrymen around the world".... From this modest start, Deutsche Welle developed in to one of the worlds most important international broadcasters with loyal listeners around the world, in an ever increasing number of languages, and mediums.
